My process begins in woodworking by layered cut pieces of wood and carving blocks on a lathe. I enjoy working in the woodshop as it is both relaxing and freeing to work with a medium that can give me sharp clean edges and beautiful wood grain texture. From here I create complicated plaster molds from my wood prototypes which take the imprints of the wood texture. When I use clay that’s deflocculated into slip and poured into my molds the water is absorbed into the plaster. This leaves behind a shell of even thickness that, once firm enough, can pop out of my molds. The result is a clay object that has the texture and shape of my wooden prototypes!
